It was ambitious. It was slightly ridiculous. And it very nearly worked. A group of determined pub-goers attempted to break the world record for the tallest beer mat tower this weekend, and for a glorious few minutes, it looked like they might actually pull it off.
What happened?
Armed with nothing but a stack of cardboard beer mats, steady hands and intense concentration, the team began building. One mat at a time. Slow. Careful. No sudden movements. The pub went unusually quiet as the tower climbed higher and higher, wobbling gently every time someone walked past.
By the halfway point, confidence was high
Phones were out. Someone had started timing it. A small crowd gathered, offering highly unhelpful advice. As the tower reached its final, record-beating height attempt, you could feel the tension in the room. One more mat. Just one more. And then, disaster struck.

The tower collapsed in a dramatic cardboard avalanche
A tiny shift. A flicker of imbalance. Perhaps a breeze from the door opening. In slow motion, the entire structure leaned, hesitated, and collapsed in a dramatic cardboard avalanche. There were groans, laughter and heartbreak. No record this time. Just a pile of beer mats and a lesson in gravity. Still, spirits weren’t dampened for long. Another round was ordered, the mats were restacked, and talk quickly turned to the next attempt.
